A Guide To Writing A Cover Letter

A cover letter may not be everyone’s favourite part of the recruitment process, however it’s still important as it builds upon the information in your CV and demonstrates why you would be a suitable fit for the role.

Conduct Your Research
Before you sit down to compose your letter, it’s important to conduct some key research about the company and the role available. Carrying out research demonstrates to the employer that you have the ability to use your own initiative and are genuinely interested in working for them. If you are replying to an advert, ensure that you refer to it frequently throughout your letter.

Tailor It
This is where your research should come into play; you should always address your cover letter to the right person, after all you don’t want your application to go astray when it arrives at the employer.  If you are unsure about the contact, don’t hesitate to call the company; it will also help you to stick in the mind of the hiring manager.  

Consider The Content
The content is quite possibly the most important part of any covering letter, so it’s essential to get it right. The opening paragraph should detail which role you would like to apply for and where you first saw it advertised.  The paragraphs which follow should explain why you are a suitable match not just for the job but for the company too. You should also outline your main career goals and expand on any key points within your CV. Finally sign off with ‘yours sincerely’ or ‘yours faithfully’ depending on who you have addressed the letter to.

End Positively
Always sign off your letter by writing something upbeat such as how you look forward to finding out more about the role and hopefully meeting with them.  This will ensure that you are remembered as an enthusiastic and positive candidate.

Don’t Forget The Layout
A cover letter should be set out in a traditional letter format starting with your address at the top and ending with your signature. It should be written in an easy-to-read font so a recruiter can review it at a glance. Also, keep it brief; your letter should be no longer than one side of A4 paper.

Review Your Content
Before sending your cover letter off, it’s essential that you proof read the content and iron our any layout issues. Also don’t forget to sign the bottom of the letter if you are physically sending it to the employer.
