Whether it is your first or your twentieth job the first week is always nerve wracking. With the pressure of making a good impression, fitting in with your co-workers and having to absorb lots of new information your first week can be overwhelming. Here are 7 things you can do to get your new job off to a great start!
Remember to dress appropriately for your first day. If you’re unsure of what you need to wear then dress formally. Turning up underdressed can make you appear lazy and unprofessional. Whereas, if you’re overdressed it will show that you’ve made an effort and still create a great impression.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions
The first week is a great time to ask lots of questions. If you are unsure of something or want more detail don’t be afraid to ask your manager or colleagues. There is always a learning period when starting a new job and your manager will be expecting your questions. Try writing down the answers to refer to later. If you choose not to query something you’re unsure of it can harm the quality of work and cause you unnecessary stress.
No company is exactly the same as another so it’s important to remember that there will be some adapting to do. Just because you’ve performed a task one way before doesn’t mean that is how your new employer wants it done. Try to remain flexible, adapting to new methods and procedures to ensure the highest quality of work and help you to maintain a good working relationship with your new employer.
Don’t over extend yourself
It’s great to come across as eager and enthusiastic in your first week, but be careful you don’t take on more responsibility than you can handle. Know your limits and don’t take on a workload you won’t be able to complete in the long-term. Over extending yourself in the first week can create unrealistic expectations from your employer.
Try to connect with new colleagues
Make sure to be polite and introduce yourself to your new co-workers. If possible, try not to leave the office for lunch during your first week to maximise interaction with your colleagues. Having a good relationship with those you work with can help to make your job much more enjoyable and will help you to relax into your new role quicker.

It is important that you aren’t late during your first week at a new job. Failing to turn up on time can give a bad first impression and can lead to your manager questioning your professionalism.
Give it time
