What Is An Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship combines practical work experience with a professional qualification, so you are able to earn while you learn. Each apprenticeship is different, some incorporate classroom based learning while others allow the individual to undertake a distance learning course. An apprenticeship can either be full or part time, depending on the employer’s requirements.

Who Can Apply For An Apprenticeship?
If you are aged over 16 and currently not in full time education, you are eligible to apply for an apprenticeship. Although some apprenticeships may targeted a specific age range such as those aged 18-24, many companies welcome all applicants and there is often no upper age limit on when a person can start an apprenticeship.  

Which Sectors Can Apprentices Work In?
There is often a common misconception that apprenticeships are only available to those who are interested in skilled manual work such as plumbing or engineering; however you can now undertake an apprenticeship in pretty much any sector going. Some popular apprenticeships include Business and Administration, IT Support and Hair and Beauty.

How Much Do Apprentices Get Paid?
All apprenticeships are paid positions, allowing you to earn while you learn. The National Minimum Wage for apprentices is £3.30 per hour if you are aged 16 to 18 and for those who are aged 19 and over who haven’t completed their first year of training. After completing the first year of your apprenticeship, you are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for your age if you are over 19.

How Long Does An Apprenticeship Take To Complete?
An apprenticeship can take between one and four years to complete, depending on a number of factors such as the level of the apprenticeship, the industry sector and the apprentice’s ability. The vast majority of this time will be spent in the workplace.

How Is An Apprenticeship Delivered And Assessed?
Apprenticeships are designed to allow the majority of learning and assessment to take place in the workplace.Although some classroom sessions maybe required to complete the course which are normally held at a local college or training provider.

There are many benefits to completing an apprenticeship including earning a salary while you gain a professional qualification, working alongside industry experts and the knowledge that you will complete your apprenticeship without any student loans or debts.

How Do I Apply?
The application process is very similar to any other job application; you will often be required to submit a copy of your CV and a covering letter as a first step.
