Not all companies will simply accept a CV when you’re applying for a role, many will ask you to fill out an application form before they’ll consider you. Application forms can be daunting but there are some simple steps you can take to ensure your form is completed to a high standard and help you to stand out as an applicant. Here are 7 ways to perfect your next job application!

Stay relevant

Make sure to tailor your answers to the job you’re applying for. Using generic answers on your application form will make it much harder to stand out from other candidates. Whatever skills you choose to write about must be relevant to the role, describing irrelevant experiences will only make you appear less suitable for a role and you could miss out on a great opportunity.

Take your time

The best thing you can do when filling out an application form is to take your time! If you rush your application your answers will suffer and you’re more likely to make mistakes. Giving yourself some time to think about your answers before completing the form will help to improve the quality of your application and increase the chances of securing a job.

Do your homework

Before completing your application it’s a good idea to do some research on the company and the job you’re applying for. Research can make a huge difference to the success of your application as it can help you personalise your answers and will give your answers an edge.

Make it personal

When writing about skills and experiences it’s important to include examples, to help you personalise your application and make your answers less generic. Personalising your application with examples will make your answers unique and help you to stand out from the crowd.

Be concise

Make sure that your answers are to the point. If a point isn’t relevant to the job don’t write about it! Long winded paragraphs will make it much harder for an employer to pick out your key attributes. Shorter more concise answers will ensure your content is relevant and easier to read.

Proof read

The worst thing you can do with your application is not proof read it before you submit it. Any spelling or grammatical mistakes can harm your chance of landing the job and will impact your employability. If you’re struggling to edit your application, why not ask friends for help – they may be able to pick up on errors you’ve missed.

References

If you include references in your application it’s important that you have received permission from the individuals involved. If you provide a reference that is unwilling to support your application your reputation could be questioned and your employability will be harmed.
