It’s really common to make a resolution to find a new job in the New Year, which means there is a lot of competition when applying for a role.  With the high volume of applicants in January it’s really important to get your job search off to a great start! Here are 7 tips for finding work this year!

1. Plan

Before you start your search it’s a good idea to create a plan. A clear plan will help you to stay focused and will, in the long run, save you time. It’s really important to plan in some down time into your search, this will ensure you stay on top form and don’t lose motivation.

2. Join job boards

Joining job boards, such as Indeed or Monster, will help to increase your prospects. Job boards will send you notifications about new and suitable roles and alert employers that you’re actively looking for work.

3. Update your CV

Make sure that you submit an up to date CV! Choosing to send an old CV that doesn’t necessarily cover any new skills you’ve developed can make you appear less qualified and will harm your prospects. Give yourself the best possible chance and add in any new and relevant skills and experiences.

4. Ask for help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Reaching out to your personal and professional network can significantly improve your job search. Your network may be able to provide you with useful advice or point you in the direction of new job opportunities.

5. Join LinkedIn

If you don’t already have a LinkedIn account you should thinking about getting one. The platform is a great way to connect with other professionals and expand your network. Having an up to date LinkedIn profile can be very advantageous as lots of hiring managers use the site to look for new talent.

6. Register your CV

Registering your CV with recruitment agencies will help to increase your prospects. Recruiters are always looking for new candidates, registering your CV with a recruiter will put you in the running for roles you might never have found on your own.

7. Narrow down your search

Before you start your job hunt it’s useful to decide on what it is you’re actually looking for. Searching for a new job can be overwhelming, knowing what salary, location or industry you’re searching for will help to filter out unsuitable roles, keep you motivated longer and save you a considerable about of time.
