Ah, the daily commute, for some this can mean a leisurely 5 minute stroll into the office, for others it can mean a hour long train journey where you are desperately clinging onto the nearest handrail.

However rather than seeing your commute as a chore, it can be the ideal time to be more productive which can in turn improve your day at work. After all, the average UK worker spends more than 10,000 hours in their lifetime getting to and from work, so rather than listening to the same old radio station over and over; use those hours to boost your career!

Why not take a look at our 5 pointers below to see how you can get the most out of your journey to work…

Plan for the Day Ahead
Your commute to work is the ideal time to plan the day ahead, think about the tasks which you need to complete and consider which goals you would like to achieve. Don’t worry, you don’t need a pen and paper for this bit; mental planning will do just fine.  Use your commute home to reflect on your day, consider what went well and what you would like to improve on in the future.

Learn Something New
No matter how long your journey is, it can be the perfect time to learn something new. If you catch a train or a bus, grab a book or dig deep around the net to improve your industry knowledge. If you’re driving, you can still use the commute to learn something new, grab a podcast or CD and tune into an audiobook or a discussion.

Get To Know Someone
If you hop on public transport, there are plenty of opportunities to get to know someone new. If you regularly catch the same bus or train, strike up a conversation with another regular; who knows they maybe able to connect you with other professionals and you may gain a lifelong friend. If you are driving, you can improve your relationship with a colleague by agreeing to car share on a regular basis. Or use the time to make some quick calls which are on your ‘to-do’ list, hands free of course.

Be Social
Don’t have enough time to catch up with your contacts on LinkedIn? Use your commute to get better acquainted with your timeline.  You can keep your profile active by ‘liking’ or ‘commenting’ on relevant articles and by sharing business updates.  Don’t forget to also add relevant contacts to further expand your professional network.

Grab A Cat Nap
If you have a long commute, it is likely you are familiar with early mornings and late nights. If you use public transport, catch up on some beauty sleep but remember to set an alarm so you don’t miss your stop. The extra zeds will also help you feel more alert once you arrive at work. Of course, this point doesn’t apply if you are jumping in the car to get to the office.
