To Post Or Not To Post? – How Social Media Can Help Or Hurt Your Job Hunt

As a job hunter, you will be aware of how you need to act in an interview or in the workplace. But have you ever considered what you post on social media can have an effect on your job hunt?

While social media sites are great tools to connect with friends, share photos or retweet the latest news article, they are also becoming crucial in the recruitment process. 

But how do you make your profile more employer-friendly? – Our  5 tips will show you how:

1) Think Before Your Type
Remember everything you post online can be seen, even if you think you have deleted a particular status, the damage may already have been done. Avoid posting any content that can be seen as offensive or negative, as a potential employer may perceive you in this way. If you need to make a complaint, seek out the official complaints procedure, where your issue will be resolved as quickly as possible. 

2) Manage Your Privacy Settings
How long has it been since you last looked at your privacy settings online?  If it has been a while, it is advisable to give it a visit, as sites such as Facebook regularly updated their privacy settings. Use the ‘view as’ tool on your profile, so you can gain a greater insight of what your profile looks like to others. Also be aware of who you ‘friend’ or ‘follow’ on social media as this can sometimes have a damaging effect on your career.

3) Clean Up Your Profile
Use you job hunt as an opportunity to clean up your social media profiles. Ensure you have a suitable profile picture and delete any inappropriate statuses.  Also don’t forget to have a suitable username on sites such as Twitter and Instagram, as this can also have an effect your chances with a potential employer.

4) Join An Online Group
You may not want to broadcast on social media that you are looking for a new job, especially if you have colleagues on your profile. But you can still join or like certain job groups to ensure you keep you up-to-date with the latest vacancies available. Avoid any negativity if you are posting in these groups, as employers will be looking for potential candidates here.

5) Engage With Employers
Finally, don’t forget to use social media to engage with a potential employer or other professionals in your desired field.  Twitter and LinkedIn are great sites to engage in posts and form relationships, which may benefit your career in the future. But remember to get the balance right of being professional and personal.
